Invisalign Care Instructions

Congratulations on the start of your Invisalign journey! Here is a review of wear and care instructions discussed at your visit. If you have any questions, please give us a call at 781-848-0292.

  1. Remember: Aligners should be worn 24/7 at all times! This means daytime, nighttime, eating, drinking, sleeping. This is essential for success. Please take the aligners out only to rinse after each meal and to brush and floss in the morning and before bedtime.

  2. Aligners can be worn when drinking water, seltzer, or black coffee or tea. Aligners should not be worn if drinking any beverages containing sugar. These can cause cavities if seeped under aligners and allowed to sit for prolonged periods of time. Please eat with your aligners in. The only foods to avoid that will stain aligners are those that contain yellow dye: mustard, mac and cheese, turmeric, etc.

  3. Wear each set of aligners for four days before switching to the next. Keep your old sets in the bags they came in.

  4. You have been given a munchie. Please make sure to use as instructed: every time aligners are re-inserted, chew on munchie for five minutes, at least five times a day. This is essential to assist with tooth movements. Munchie replacements are $5 each.

  5. You have been instructed on how to put on and take off your aligners. Most get used to this very quickly, but if you have any difficulties, there is an “aligner pull tool” that can be purchased on Amazon to assist with this.

  6. Some minor discomfort at the beginning of each set of aligners can be normal, as teeth are shifting. That being said, everyone feels discomfort differently. While rare, if you experience any severe pain, you may take acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or your choice of over-the-counter pain medication. Starting a new set of aligners at bedtime can also help.

  7. Cleaning aligners: Cleaning crystals are enclosed in your welcome kit. You can sprinkle some into a cup of water and soak your aligners for a few minutes while brushing your teeth. If you finish the crystals, you can buy denture cleaning tablets at a drugstore, break them into pieces, and soak aligners as well. You may also brush your aligners with a toothbrush and some unscented antibacterial soap. Rinse thoroughly.

  8. If you do need to remove your aligners while you are out, remember to place them in the case provided so that they won’t be easily lost or damaged.

  9. If you lose your aligners, you must not be wearing them. Move on to the next one and give our office a call so we can evaluate.
